The Tamiya TXT-1 (Tamiya Xtreme Truck) is the ultimate 1/10 scale monster truck chassis, making it a great starting point for a medium-sized outdoor robot. The 4×4x4 chassis gives you power and steering on all four wheels for maximum control and maneuverability of your robot. The gear ratio is higher than on many similar-looking models since this truck is geared toward rock climbing rather than racing. The stock cantilever suspension system provides a huge amount of travel to help ensure that you won’t get stuck.

The kit includes two 540-sized motors and most of the hardware and mechanical components necessary to get up and running. For typical radio control installations, a radio system and 6-cell battery are necessary; for robotics applications, a high-power motor controller and robot controller would replace the RC receiver. Each pair of wheels is steered by a separate servo, so two servos are required to achieve four-wheel steering. Due to the size and weight of the chassis, we recommend high-torque or giant servos for the best control. We are developing a high-power motor controller that we expect to be available in early 2006. Until it is available, we recommend using hobby speed controls, which are affordable but sometimes slightly difficult to control at low speeds.
